Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th 1999) is an American performer and actress. Her career spans more than 40 years. London was a torch singer and was well-known for her soft, smooth voice. She recorded over 30 albums of standards and jazz between 1955 and 1969. The album she released as her debut "Cry Me a River" was recorded by her and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Alongside her note on the music, London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1974 in her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her professional career began as an actress while she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year career in acting began on film in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in numerous westerns. She also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) along with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the late 1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional musical career. In 1969 she released her final studio album. But she continued to be part of the Emergency show as Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), in which she was portrayed by her husband Bobby Troup. The show was directed by her former husband Jack Webb.
